The up-and-coming gastronomy scene of Estepona

There was a time when, compared to Marbella, Estepona’s culinary offering was hearty, charming, traditional and authentic, but rather more humble than that of its illustrious neighbour. But things are changing. You can still find wonderfully authentic Andalusian eateries in the historic centre and also surrounding areas, but as a reflection of the current dynamism sweeping this part of the Costa del Sol, Estepona could be said to be a town on the move.

Not likely to lose its traditional charm, as this is one of the things that makes it so appealing to foreign residents and visitors, Estepona is now adding to its repertoire with a new generation of quality restaurants, cafes and tapas bars. Most can be found in the historic centre, though the process is also making its presence felt along the beachfront, in the marina and even the residential outskirts of town and the New Golden Mile – the coastal strip between Estepona and San Pedro Alcántara.

It is accompanied by a trend towards a higher quality and greater diversity of shopping too, and both come in response to the growing number of visitors and residents within the Estepona municipal boundaries. What’s more, with property development in this area becoming ever more exclusive, it is attracting an increasingly affluent and discerning demographic, and they desire the choice of authenticity and fine dining.

Town centre
Estepona’s town centre offers a good mix of both, with the area near the fresh produce market (near the charming town walls and Castillo de San Luís) offering a blossoming of gastro-tapas bars, bistros and also quality Italian restaurants. Further along – near the pretty Plaza de las Flores (Estepona’s equivalent of Marbella’s Plaza de Naranjos), you will find more traditional restaurants as well as some excellent new fine dining options, with the pedestrianised streets leading up to the atmospheric Plaza Ortíz offering a mix of traditional and new eateries, as well as cocktail bars and funky evening venues.

Just across the seaside boulevard is another upcoming dining area with good seafood restaurants and chiringuitos, of which the most stylish is Bikini Beach, where the fish simply has to tried.
